The key to successful retrieval of visual information is the selection and correct application of the right vocabulary. This half-day workshop will focus on the use of special vocabularies for information retrieval of objects and images of objects. Even if you are only a one-person operation, or you think you already know how to use specialized vocabularies to catalog and retrieve visual information, this workshop is intended for you. From museum librarians and archivists to visual resources curators and reference librarians, all may benefit.

Problems posed by the workshop leaders will focus on application of the vocabularies in everyday work situations. No computer facility will be assumed or required. Material covered in the workshop will include the Getty vocabularies of the Art & Architecture Thesaurus™, Union List of Artist Names, and Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names™. Also to be discussed will be ICONCLASS, an iconographic classification system of ready-made definitions of objects, persons, events, situations, and abstract ideas that can be the subject of a work of art.
