2001: an LA odyssey ARLIS/NA 29th Annual Conference
Thursday March 29 to Wednesday April 4, 2001

Welcome to ARLIS/NA 2001: An L.A. Odyssey

The ARLIS/Southern California Chapter welcomes you to Los Angeles for the 29th Annual ARLIS/NA Conference. L.A. conjures up many distinct images: Hollywood and the dazzle of the movie industry; sunshine, palm trees, the Pacific; the promise of plenty and the excess of wealth; Watts, Little Tokyo, and Beverly Hills. L.A. is truly a place where social trends arise from an ever-bubbling pot of cultural mixing. In L.A. you can sample an astounding array of new and old architecture, art, museums, libraries, landscapes, and neighborhoods. And dining, shopping, and entertainment opportunities abound!

The local L.A. Conference Committee, led by the Conference Planning Advisory Committee (CPAC) chaired by Karen McKenzie, has crafted an exciting program. Six workshops, eighteen (!) tours, nine poster sessions, and numerous regular sessions will be offered. The list of tours is exceptional: L.A. Neon (at night of course), east and south central L.A. mural art, L.A. Conservancy walking tours, and visits to Santa Monica, San Juan Capistrano, Palm Springs, and Pasadena. Also planned are tours to three public libraries housing major art research materials (Beverly Hills, Brand, and L.A. Central); Little Tokyo and the Japanese American National Museum; the Autry Museum of Western Heritage; the L.A. County Museum of Art; and the Ennis Brown/Schindler-Chase Houses. A highlight will be the Convocation and dinner buffet at the Getty Center where we will experience the full beauty of the Center’s architecture and gardens in the early evening.

We hope you will find the programs provocative, take the opportunity to network with your colleagues, and enjoy Los Angeles at the 2001 ARLIS/NA Conference!!

Leslie Abrams,
ARLIS/NA West Regional Representative

Dear ARLIS/NA Members,

It’s that time of year again! Time to start making your travel plans for the 2001 annual conference in Los Angeles, even while memories of Pittsburgh are still fresh. L.A. will be different—- but equally terrific and well worth your time and money. The theme is a clever salute to Tinseltown: 2001, an LA Odyssey. There’ll be glitz in sessions like "Hollywood Design: Decadence, Glamour, Fantasy, Modernism and Opulence in 20th Century Southern California" and continuing education in such topics as approval plans, film and video art documentation, and copyright issues. Our Convocation at the Getty Center, including an outdoor buffet hosted by the Getty Research Library, should be memorable.

It is my pleasure to invite you to the 29th Annual Conference, March 29-April 4, 2001. Join us for workshops, stimulating sessions, and a super group of trade exhibitors and system vendors. Must-see tours range from a visit to the 225-year old Mission San Juan Capistrano (swallows included!) to a Night Cruise on Neon Art. Make new friends and renew old acquaintanceships at this tantalizing line-up of educational and fun offerings. I look forward to welcoming you to Los Angeles.

Karen McKenzie
President, ARLIS/NA
